Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. In her early years Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. She joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she wasn't a good fit. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered an interview on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time, she had already made her TV debut on an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus, and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
